2016 Ford Ranger

2016 Ford Ranger trunk
The 2016 Ford Ranger is a track we hope has everything from efficient diesels to the new 2.7 liter Ecoboost V-6 that is seen in the new 2015 F-150 (maybe 2016 Bronco). With so many engine choices from Ford we hope they deliver in giving the Ranger a big set of ball(s) bearing turbos to make the Ranger into an Airborne Ranger. We would like to think that the 2016 Ranger would soon find its way to the states but that is not likely to happen. There are likely the two-diesel options staying the same with the 2.2L and the 3.2L turbo-diesel carrying over. A special edition like the big brother Raptor has been talked about with the 2.7 liter Ecoboost but nobody from Ford will give us the definite so it only appears to be speculation.

2016 Ford Ranger side view 2The C.E.O Alan Mulally stated that Ford Motor Company was going to have global platforms that would be shared around the world. Well for the 2016 Ford Ranger that is true unless you live in the good ol’ U.S.A. as we have possibly lost the Ranger for good. Why is the Ranger gone you ask? Because the marketing assholes think bigger is always better and now there is a full-size shrimp dick challenge to give us trucks that the owners can’t even operate without backing into school children. Dennis Leary and Sam Elliot are telling us how much bigger the truck is getting and how many creature comforts there are.

Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class

Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class 2016
Continue Reading
Benz’s naming changes largely make sense, unlike those of Infiniti. (We’re supposed to be the experts and we still use the Japanese luxury brand’s old designations to refer to its vehicles.) Benz’s logic comes courtesy of aligning its SUVs with its core sedan lineup, so the GLK became the GLC (C-class), the ML became the GLE (E-class), and the GL became this model, the GLS (S-class). (The A-class-aligned GLA-class launched under the new naming convention.)
The top-spec non-AMG model is the GLS550, and according to one Mercedes display we saw at the launch event, it is “lavishly motorized” thanks to a 4.7-liter twin-turbo V-8 putting out 449 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. From behind the wheel, this engine is sufficient in the same way that a gas-powered blender is. Yes, it’s fun, but you rarely have a chance to use the available power. The lower-cost V-6s once again are the sweet spots of the lineup, and the diesel-powered GLS350d even gets a small power bump over its predecessor.
The biggest changes concern the big SUV’s mechanicals. All three non-AMG models now come with a new nine-speed automatic, which sports a wide, 9.17:1 ratio spread. In most driving modes (which number five or six depending on equipment), the transmission starts in second gear for smooth, cushy throttle tip-in; only Sport mode engages the shortest ratio. In the interest of efficiency, Benz engineers spent the last five years optimizing the four-planetary-gearset gearbox. It uses two pumps to generate the hydraulic pressure required for operation, with a mechanical pump working while the engine is turning and a second electric pump adding pressure when needed. The latter also allows for quick re-ignition during engine stop-start operation.

Lamborghini Huracan LP580-2 2016

Lamborghini Huracan LP580-2 2016

Fewer Driven Wheels, More PowerFull
While this new rear-drive Huracán is a cheaper entry into Lambo ownership, it's also being pitched as more involving to drive than the existing LP610-4, trading some performance for the excitement and adjustability that comes from having more power than grip. A rear-wheel-drive Huracán was always part of the plan, unlike the rear-wheel-drive Gallardo, which was pretty much a driveshaft-removal job. Shedding the LP610's electronically controlled clutch pack as well as its propeller shaft, front differential, and related hardware saves a relatively modest 73 pounds in weight, but it also delivers some definitive differentiation over the Audi R8 that shares most of the baby Lambo’s structure and powertrain.
Image result for Lamborghini Huracan LP580-2
As the name suggests, the LP580’s mid-mounted 5.2-liter V-10 has been slightly downtuned, now delivering 572 horsepower. Both the engine speed at which peak power arrives and the fuel cutoff have fallen by 250 rpm to 8000 rpm and 8500 rpm compared with the 602-hp LP610-4. When we speculated as to whether this modest reduction in output had been done to ensure the cheaper, lighter car was not quicker than its $39,100-dearer sister, nobody looked too outraged, although Reggiani says the engine has also been digitally retuned to have a flatter torque curve better suited to, you've guessed it, going sideways.

Performance losses are minimal. Figure on a zero-to-60-mph time 0.2 second behind the regular car, which we timed at 2.5 seconds. The quoted top speed of 199 mph is 3 mph off the 610’s terminal velocity, which is unlikely to be an issue to anyone but latter-day moonshine runners.

Track Time

We, however, didn’t get a chance to drive the LP580-2 on the road, only on the Losail circuit located at the edge of the desert near Doha. Having seen Qatar's roads on our way to the track, we can report this as no great loss, as the entire country seems to be a construction site, sand, or some combination of both. But it does mean that we traveled all the way to the Middle East for the grand total of 16 laps of the 3.4-mile track, best known for hosting a round of the MotoGP championship. But don't worry—we made ’em count.

Mini Cooper Clubman 2016

Mini Cooper Clubman 2016

Size Matters
While the previous-generation Clubman offered Mini devotees a smidge more room than the standard Hardtop and somewhat easier rear-seat access via a rear half-door on the right side, the 2016 Cooper Clubman (internal code F54) offers two conventional rear doors. Overall length is up accordingly, the Clubman now measuring 168.3 inches long, adding 12.4 inches to the previous Clubman’s 155.9-inch measurement. For the record, the new Clubman also is longer than the taller Countryman by between 5.2 and 6.6 inches (depending on the Countryman’s spec). Width gets a bump, too, the new car coming in at 70.9 inches in comparison to the previous 66.3-inch figure. While the increase in length is immediately obvious to even the casual eye—thanks in no small part to the prominent presence of the rear doors—the increase in width is hardly discernible. To put its size into perspective, consider that the Cooper Clubman is still just 0.8-inch longer than the current Volkswagen Golf four-door hatchback, 7.3 inches shorter in length than the Mazda 3 hatchback, and a full 11.3 inches shorter than the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen.
Image result for 2016 Mini Cooper Clubman
Image result for 2016 Mini Cooper ClubmanAlthough it’s true that the enlarged exterior proportions have cleared the way for increased interior space, packages and other cargo stand to benefit the most. While the driver and front-seat passenger get more shoulder room (up by 4.4 inches to 54.7), that same measurement in the rear has increased by a significant 6.9 inches to a usable-by-actual-humans 52.8-inch total. Too bad about the hard bottom of the rear-seat cushion, which might make even the least whiny children (Mini claims there is room for three abreast, but we don’t see it) clamor for a break after a long stretch of highway travel. Cargo space is the real winner here, the new Clubman offering 47.9 cubic feet with the rear seats folded—15.1 cubic feet more luggage room than the previous Clubman. It’s enough, Mini claims, to fit a washing machine, although we can’t imagine any “cool uncle” doing his own laundry, let alone transporting an actual appliance; crates of hand-rolled cigars or artisan beard wax might be a more appropriate cargo.

Mercedes-Benz E63 4mtic

The 49ers almost turned Super Bowl XLVII around. Commissioner Gordon almost saved Batman’s girlfriend. The 2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG’s S model offers almost 600 horsepower, but we bet few people are terribly disappointed that it’s actually 23 shy. And with 590 lb-ft of torque testing the traction limits on all four tires, it’s hard to feel anything but a giddy sense of awe.

To route that much energy to just the rear 285/35-19s might test not only their traction limits but also the boundaries of good sense. Because near-600-horse executive sedans are nothing if not sensible, all-wheel drive is now standard on base and S versions of the 2014 E63 AMG. Its official name is now E63 AMG 4MATIC. Here, the system defaults to a 33/67-percent front-to-rear torque split, although it can send a maximum of 70 percent to either end. It adds 154 pounds—less than Quattro adds to an A6 or xDrive to a 5-series.
Our educated guess pegs the involuntary grunting that accompanies full-throttle acceleration as equivalent to three sit-ups per launch. Our tech department’s educated guess predicts that the E63 can hit 60 mph in 3.4 seconds, the S in 3.3, and either version can complete a quarter-mile blitzkrieg in fewer than 12 seconds. If you’re shifting manually, your reflexes had better be quick. Fail to grab the next gear the second the tach flashes an angry red, and the 5.5’s headlong rush for rpm ends abruptly at the rev limiter. Even in the upper gears, the engine’s pull from low rpm very quickly translates into illicit velocity.

Volkswagen Golf TDI Diesel DS

Volkswagen Golf TDI Diesel DS

VW Golf was Germany’s cubic answer to OPEC and the Honda CVCC. Those of you accustomed to thinking of it as the cheap little heir to the Rabbit, itself the heir to the original hippy-tippy Beetle, need to get up and adjust the rabbit ears on your signal receiver. Nowadays, VW is out of the cheap-car business and the punched-out, buffed-up, brushed-metal-trimmed 2015 Golf is a Mercedes-Benz with the trunk hacked off. Go for the 2.0-liter EA288 TDI diesel, just becoming available next month, and you can revel in this hatchback’s epicurean comforts for more than 450 miles between pit stops.

Image result for Volkswagen Golf TDI Diesel DS
Continue Reading
Golf TDI equipped with a six-speed dual-clutch automatic averaged 34 mpg, a good result given that we tend not to drive with economy in mind. You’d have to get into a much smaller gasoline car or an equally expensive hybrid to match this fuel efficiency. We can even see sane people getting routinely close to 40 mpg. The TDI’s 60-mph mark comes in 7.8 seconds and the quarter-mile in 16.1 on strong low- and midrange urge from the engine’s 236 lb-ft of torque. Those are very acceptable numbers in times when everybody is driving much too fast—except for all the morons who are driving way too slow. At 80 mph, the Golf TDI is in a very happy and stable groove, the cabin remaining plush and quiet and free from wind noise. But push past 80 clicks (pretend you’re in Germany) and the engine begins to audibly strain.
Image result for Volkswagen Golf TDI Diesel DS

Throw it into a cloverleaf and there’s 0.86-g worth of roadholding from the wide, deluxe Continetnal ContiProContact tires. This 3237-pound Golf has plenty of suspension travel for taming rough stuff, but the body doesn’t wallow in a high-g turn, as did some previous Golfs. The strong structure kills vibrations and road thrum, and the Golf has that solid German highway composure that makes traveling to Oma’s house in Oberbayern such a secret pleasure.

Price of Frugality

The diesel’s thrift comes at a price, however. The premium for the TDI over a gasoline TSI engine in our tested SE trim, DSG (TDI) to torque-converter automatic (TSI), is $2100. Six-speed manual transmission TDIs are available in the SE and the higher-spec SEL range, but no manuals are offered in those trims in the gasoline TSI version, so direct price comparisons there are impossible.

However, if you’re thinking of being frugal and gunning for an entry-level three-door Golf S manual, then VW nails you. The upcharge from the TSI S manual to the TDI S manual is a vengeful $3000, although you also get larger 16-inch wheels with that. That puts the TDI base prices as follows: S manual, $22,815; SE manual, $26,315; SE DSG (our test car), $27,415; and the Eldorado of Golf diesels, the SEL, at $28,815 (add $1100 for an automatic). So that makes the $23,315 base S five-door model the least-expensive Golf TDI with the DSG automatic.

Ultimately, with VW’s diesel-engine surcharge and U.S. diesel-fuel prices being generally the same or higher than gasoline, you may want to view the 500-mile cruising range of the TDI as you would a convenience option, such as a sunroof, sport package, or fancy stereo. Unless you routinely drive long distances, though, it’s going to take quite a while for the TDI to earn back its premium, so don’t buy one thinking you’ll necessarily save money. And whatever you do save may be forgotten every time you—running on fumes—pull into a station only to discover that it doesn’t serve diesel.
The Golf TDI’s big price leap is from S to SE trim, which buys you a sunroof, 17-inch wheels, and a lot of electronic conveniences such as rain-sensing wipers, heated seats, and a rearview camera. The seats remain “leatherette,” but it’s very nice leatherette. You do not get automatic climate control, which won’t bother some, but in fine Euro-car tradition, the Golf’s A/C takes its time chilling a hot cabin.

BMW Review M4 GTS

BMW Review M4 GTS
Image result for BMW M4 GTS
M4 GTS’ new technologies include the water-injection system and OLED taillights. The water-injection system was first used on BMW’s M4 MotoGP safety car and is used in many race cars today. What the system does is inject ultra-fine water spray into the plenums of the intake. The water is then vaporized, which cools the intake air dramatically, thus reducing the compression temperature in the combustion chamber. This not only reduces the engine’s tendency to knock, but allows higher boost pressure and earlier ignition timing, giving the M4 GTS a noticeable horsepower and torque bump.
Image result for BMW review M4 GTS
BMW’s M Division have also developed a highly-innovative cooling system, comprised of a main radiator with additional radiators for both high and low-temperature circuits, the transmission and turbochargers. The turbochargers are cooled by way of an indirect intercooler assisted by an electrically-driven water pump.

Features
Image result for BMW review M4 GTS engine
OLED taillights also make their way to the BMW Concept M4 GTS. OLEDs (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) produce full-surface homogenous illumination, as opposed to a standard LEDs single-point light emission. Their compact design and ability to light individual light modules separately gives BMW an extra level of flexibility in creating taillights.

The lightweight, forged and polished light-alloy wheels in 666 M styling also feature an Acid Orange accent. The 9.5 J x 19 (front) and 10.5 J x 20 (rear) wheels are fitted with Michelin Sport Cup 2 tires (265/35 R19 at the front, 285/30 R20 at the rear).
Image result for BMW review M4 GTS
BMW Concept M4 GTS is an outstanding looking machine that will deliver exceptional performance, both on the road and on the track. The water-injection system and OLED taillights give it genuine racing technology to be used on the road. So if you’re a lucky owner of one of these, very limited, M4 GTS’, you can truthfully say that you own a race car for the street.
